Melanie C almost didn’t return as Sporty Spice for the Spice Girls’ 2019 Tour.
The singer rose to fame as 1/5 of the record-breaking chart-topping quintet but, speaking to You magazine, she admits she wasn’t initially convinced returning to the group for their latest jaunt was a good idea.
Citing anxieties surrounding revisiting the past, she explains: “Going back isn’t just about going back to be with the girls – which is great; it’s also going back to those emotions of who you were in the band.
“I did talk to my therapist a lot about those feelings. I was concerned about having to become Sporty Spice again,” says the Fearless hitmaker. “Then it just hit me that I am her, but I’m older and happier and I have so much more confidence.
“Once I realised that, it was a gamechanger. And the reunion tour was magical,” smiles Melanie. The fans were there to have the best time and they were looking fantastic.
“We all had our kids there. We sang in the sun and the rain. Of all the tours it was, for me, the most special.”
While fifth member Victoria Beckham was absent for the Spice World tour, news leaked over the summer that she had reunited for discussions about the group’s 25th anniversary in 2021.
Of possible celebrations, Melanie teases: “We have our WhatsApp group and we are all talking but I can’t say more than that.”
Melanie released her eighth, self-titled album in October, with Retro Pop calling the release “without a doubt her most confident, polished, and exciting release to date,” naming singles Blame It on Me and In and Out of Love and deep cuts Here I Am and Good Enough as highlights.
