Mariah Carey and Busta Rhymes have created the sequel to their 2003 music video I Know What You Want on their latest collaboration Where I Belong.
The pair have teamed up on the new track, lifted from the rapper’s current LP ‘Extinction Level Event 2: The Wrath of God’, 18 years after their UK and US No. 3 hit.
“The past is an animal that chases you forever,” Busta says at the beginning of his new music video. “The past chases you, until it catches you.”
In the visual, complete with Frank Miller’s ‘Sin City’–style graphic-novel illustrations, Mariah and Busta reprise their roles from the early ’00s clip.
In the first video, the hitmaker tasked by his boss, played by Michael Jai White, to watch over his wife, portrayed by Tae Heckard, during a work trip. Naturally, Busta immediately falls for her and the pair are tormented by their forbidden love.
And it’s more bad news in the sequel, as well find Heckard’s character was kidnapped and has been missing for 18 years, framing the narrative of the second instalment.
Despite the drama, the prospect of a happy ending isn’t completely over, as the video sets up the possibility of a third instalment – and another duet between Busta and Mariah.
It’s been three years since Mariah released her acclaimed 15th LP, ‘Caution’, and she returned last year with ‘The Rarities’ – a 15 track collection of unreleased recordings, B-sides and live cuts from throughout her career.
In our review of the album, Retro Pop said Mariah “more than proves she’s earned her ‘icon’ status” across the set.
