Lindsey Buckingham believes a return to Fleetwood Mac could be on the cards after he was sensationally fired in 2018.
The singer and guitarist fronted the band – alongside singer Stevie Nicks, and keyboard player and vocalist Christine McVie – since 1975, but was ousted following a disagreement with ex-girlfriend Stevie following the group’s MusiCares tribute.
He was subsequently replaced by former Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell and Neil Finn of Crowded House, but Lindsey now believes he’s wanted back in the supergroup.
Speaking on the WTF with Marc Maron podcast, the Go Your Own Way hitmaker opened up on his reconciliation with drummer Mick Fleetwood, sharing: “We love each other and we reinforced each others sensibilities in the band
“It’s my sense that pretty much everyone would love to see me come back”.
However, the star, who will release his self-titled seventh solo album on September 17, admitted rejoining the band might not actually be “doable”.
In the same interview, Lindsey admitted his firing from the group was harmful for its legacy, musing: “What was most disappointing about it to me was not, ‘Oh, I’m not gonna get to do this tour’.
“What it was again, we spent 43 years building this legacy which was about rising above things – it stood for more than the music.”
Despite the band moving on from the spat, Neil recently insisted he’d happily step down from his role if Lindsey were to return to the fold.
“I would be delighted for them if they reconcile. I would gladly step aside to allow that to happen,” he smiled.
“I’m not entering the arena in terms of whether that is possible. But I’m really happy that Mick has crossed some bridges with Lindsey. I know that had to happen at some point.”
Neil added: “I know it’s not as simple as that. But look, if it served Fleetwood Mac and its best interests, I would be delighted for them.”
