Kym Mazelle was baffled when she came face to face with Mr Blobby in the early nineties.
The First Lady of House had no idea who the larger than life character was when she found herself on the same billings as the larger than life character, who topped the UK charts with the eponymous Christmas single.
“I was on ‘Top of the Pops’, which was fascinating because they had all kinds of music, from Sting to Mr Blobby,” she laughs. “He was just this giant pink thing with yellow polka dots and I didn’t even know what he was!”
The US star tells RETROPOP’s March 2023 issue: There were a lot of novelty records coming out and I didn’t understand some of that British humour. It was a different humour, a different culture – all these things, on acid, thrown at you at once and I was like, ‘…What?!’
“I remember doing the Smash Hits Christmas event at Wembley and the record company took me in through the back and I was waiting in some kind of holding place. I’ll never forget, it was like stepping through a magic door and being in Wonderland; there was Santa, Mr Blobby, the Teletubbies – and thousands of people!”
