Hanson admit recording their new album ‘Red Green Blue’ was a “painful” process, as each brother worked on their tracks separately.

Composed of three solo projects, the album – out May 20 – showcases Taylor, Isaac and Zac’s individual contributions to the band, coming together to form a cohesive whole.

Hanson share ‘Don’t Let Me Down’ from new album ‘Red Green Blue’

Hanson recall taking over family home ahead of ‘90s success: ‘Our parents were obviously nuts!’

Speaking in the June 2022 issue of Retro Pop, the trio reflect on creating the album, which Taylor admits was difficult.

Revealing the project was “born out of thinking what was interesting to everyone at this point and trying to change the process,” he says: “It produced some great things, but it was painful for me.

“Because it was a process of, you don’t have your hands around everything. [You’re] not able to know how the whole thing’s gonna be.”

While Taylor found distancing himself from his brothers frustrating, Isaac took the opportunity to rediscover his voice.

“My approach initially for the ‘Red Green Blue’ album was to deliberately make it different,” he explains.

“I don’t think a lot of bands could do what we ended up doing. Because all three of us are singers by trade, it allowed for us to kind of lean into this a little bit more.

“And then to expand upon that, you say to yourself, ‘What is my voice? What does it really sound like and look like?’ And I think for me, I wanted to lean into some of the more personal, more songwriter, even rootsy elements of who I am.”

It also allowed Zac to dig deeper than ever before, reflecting: “When we hit the 25th anniversary of the band, to me there was a mental shift that said, ‘It’s not really just about making music anymore’.

“So, I just started thinking about records more like, ‘What kind of stories are we telling? How are we deepening the connection and the understanding of the band?’.”
