Gwen Stefani believed “nobody would listen” to her new music – until her latest single, Let Me Reintroduce Myself, rocketed up the iTunes charts.
The former No Doubt star released Let Me Reintroduce Myself as the lead single from her forthcoming fifth album in December, marking her first new, non-festive release since 2016.
Despite boasting a three-decade career, Gwen admits she wasn’t sure whether there was a market for future releases from the star.
Recalling she cried when her fiancee Blake Shelton told her she was No.1 16 in the US iTunes chart with the track, she explained: “I was standing in the kitchen the day the song came out and Blake came in and said, ‘Oh my God you’re number 16 on iTunes.
“I just burst out crying and I didn’t even know that I felt like that,” she added, according to the Daily Star’s Wired column.
“The whole reason we wrote it was that I was feeling like an underdog or over, like nobody would listen anymore.
“I’m fine with that, I’ve had my time, 30 years I’m good,” she said. “But the one thing that still fuels my fire is writing music, you get addicted to that feeling, that taste of blood.”
In addition to the tune, the Cool singer also dropped an accompanying music video, which sees her dig deep into her closet to revive some of her most iconic looks.
Beginning in an ensemble reminiscent of the look for the track’s single cover, Gwen is seen filming the video, before more of the star’s personas arrive to offer their input to the shoot.
Speaking about her latest record, the Hollaback Girl hitmaker recently told Zane Lowe on Apple Music the collection is all about her collaborations with her co-writers.
“This record so far has been a real collaboration, and all the stuff I’ve ever done that’s been good I think has been me being able to collaborate and inspire whoever I’m working with, whether it be designing a handbag or writing a song, everything it seems like,” she shared.
“I have hooked up with all new writers this time around,” added Gwen, revealing Julia Michaels, Justin Tranter, Busby, Greg Kurstin and Mozella have all contributed to the record.
