Green Day were among the acts that took to the stage during Monday (April 1) night’s iHeartRadio Music Awards, delivering a rocking performance of their hit Basket Case.
The track originally featured on the group’s third studio album ‘Dookie’ (1994) and the original demo version of the song recently materialised on the LP’s 30th anniversary edition.
Taking to the stage at The Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, where they received the Landmark award, the band performed the demo version of the track as part of a medley, alongside Bobby Sox from their most-recent album ‘Saviors’ (2024).
Despite previously saying the original lyrics were “embarrassingly bad” and calling rewriting them “the best decision I’d ever made, probably, as a songwriter”, Billie Joe Armstrong sang: ‘They said this has been emotionless flight / Around each other intoxicating their minds / Dancing in the street under suburban lights / They stumbled to the ground without a hurt.’
It was Avril Lavigne who presented the group with the award, introducing the band’s performance before handing the trio the gong afterwards.
