Gabriella Cilmi has further previewed her upcoming album ‘Pure Love‘ with her latest single ‘Pieces’.
Backed by a warm, live instrumentation, the track leans into a classic ‘60s soul and R&B sound, as the singer-songwriter muses on the emotional stages of walking away and moving on from a past relationship.
“‘Pieces’ is about seeing the person you once loved with somebody else and the flood of emotions and questions that comes with that,” she says. “For this record I really wanted to have the female gaze at the forefront so I purposefully seeked out female collaborators.
“I wrote this one with Julia Church who is one of the most brilliant artists and songwriters I’ve ever worked with. I was listening to Roberta Flack’s record ‘First Take’ at the time and that really inspired the mood of the song.”

The Australian singer-songwriter, who was just 16 years old when she topped the charts back in 2008 with her breakthrough hit, ‘Sweet About Me’, had previously taken the decision to step away from the industry following the release of her third album, ‘The Sting’ (2013).
But after revisiting a video of her performing the Rolling Stones classic ‘Jumping Jack Flash’ from her childhood, it was her partner that suggested she reconnect with who she was back then, with the resulting body of work arriving as her latest record.
In a press release, Cilmi says: “[The title song and lead single] ‘Pure Love’ is a homecoming record for me, it’s about coming home to yourself. To me this song really feels like a mantra of surrender and I wrote it as a reminder to get out of my head and back into the moment. I hope it can help others do the same.”
‘Pure Love’ is released on October 9 and available to pre-order from Amazon, HMV, Rough Trade, Townsend and more.
