Coming off her Eurovision finale performance, Netta is back with her brand new single, Everything.
The performer – who topped the scoreboard back in 2018 and landed Israel their first win in 20 years with Toy – has teamed up with AJR and Zara Larsson to co-write the tune, which waves goodbye to the past and sees her step into an exciting new era.
Speaking exclusively to RETROPOP, Netta revealed she’s been holding onto the single for some time, waiting for the right moment to release it into the world.
“You know how you sometimes have a top in your closet that’s just not you? Like it fits you so well but it’s not you yet? This song has been in my closet for years and it’s never been the right time for me confidence-wise,” she shares. “I always loved it but I didn’t have the courage to go through with it because of my own insecurities.
“A lot of my songs take a minute, because they have my own signature stamp – I was always compared with other girls and I didn’t want to see myself that way, so I was always trying to find my niche. But this is pure, unapologetic pop and I love it!”
Everything is an anthemic disco-pop earworm that emphasises how liberating it is to know what you deserve and to not be afraid to work for it, and comes complete with a music video, set in New York, that captures the freeing nature and joy of the song.
It’s the first flavour of what’s to come from Netta ahead of her ‘Wonderful & Great World Tour’, with the singer revealing she’s been experimenting with different flavours in the studio – and has even turned to the kids at her local school to get feedback!
“I’m having a lot of fun with music,” she smiles. “I wanted to spice it up a little, so there are a lot of different flavours, and I can like a lot of stuff in the studio but I have no idea how it will do outside of that.
“Sometimes I go to the school in my neighbourhood and play some of the things I’m working on, just to get their reaction. I do like 8-12 years old, who respond really well, then 12-15 are like ‘huh’, but high schoolers are really into it!”
Having returned to the Eurovision stage back in May to cover Dead or Alive’s You Spin Me Round (Like A Record) as part of the show’s Liverpool Songbook segment, Netta insists that now is the time to take her career to the next level and deliver the goods to her worldwide fanbase.
She adds: “I am very lucky that some of my things are reaching a global audience and I’m always so astounded by how many videos and how many reactions I get from Japan and Korea and Australia.
“Even the US; I once walked into a Bareburger in New York and the girl said, ‘Oh my God, you’re that girl from TikTok’. So I can never anticipate what and where this is going to work; I just have to like it in the studio and then just hope that the art makes it out there.”
Everything is out now on Polydor/Hollywood Records. Netta’s Wonderful & Great World Tour hits The Garage, London on September 1.
