Guitarist and singer Dom Brown is back with his first solo album in eight years.
The star, best known as current guitarist for Duran Duran, has enjoyed a storied career, playing with everyone from Take That to Sugababes, Elton John to Appleton.
And on his latest release – the first since 2013’s ‘Blue to Brown’ – he showcases the breadth of his musical abilities, with an album that’s as diverse as it is inspired.
Opening with a slice of ‘70s rock, Mercury’s Ascending kicks off proceedings with a bang, leaving no doubt that Dom Brown is more than capable of going it alone.
The subject of two people connecting couldn’t be more apt, as we delve into the mind of the musician who almost single-handedly commands the instrumentation of the nine-track set.
No two cuts are the same; ‘In My Bones’ segues through blues, rock and pop sensibilities with the multi-hyphenate the thread running through the core of the LP.
And while the upbeat rockier numbers allow him to let loose, it’s the mid-tempo tracks that allow him to shine musically and vocally, and demonstrate his skillset as a songwriter.
From the introspection of Whisper to the Wise to the blind optimism of Leap of Faith, Dom succeeds in cementing his identity as a solo artist capable of carrying the show alone.
The songs are strong and the music is tight, but Dom’s biggest achievement here is crafting a body of work that stands its own and backs up decades perfecting his craft.
‘In My Bones’ is available digitally and on CD.
