Spiller has shared Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s previously-unheard demo of Groovejet (If This Ain’t Love).
The track, which was Sophie’s first solo single back in 2000, famously beat Victoria Beckham and Dane Bowers to No. 1 in the UK, giving the star her first chart-topper.
After years of absence, the original version of the tune was recently uploaded to digital platforms and, on his Soundcloud page, Spiller has shared an early demo, featuring alternate lyrics from Sophie.
Clocking in at 1.35, the demo has a similar melody throughout the verses, along with a largely different chorus, without the final track’s “If this ain’t love / Why does it feel so good?” hook.
The demo maintains its sample of Carol Williams’ Love Is You.
Meanwhile, over on his Instagram page Spiller has been sharing the story behind the classic single, including his ongoing battle to license the sample and the pair’s journey to No. 1.
Sophie re-recorded Groovejet (If This Ain’t Love) with Freemasons for her latest Greatest Hits album ‘Songs From the Kitchen Disco’, and opened up about the track while marking its 20th anniversary last year.
In an Instagram post, she penned: “This is a still from 20 years ago when I flew to Bangkok to film the video for Groovejet. Little did I know back then how many places Groovejet would take me.
“At the time, it felt like a slightly crazy thing to do a dance tune. I’d been in an indie band up until then and dance music was a whole unknown.
“I was a bit worried the folk in the indie scene would think I’d lost all credibility- because that was a really big thing in my mind at the time – but I was feeling a bit burned by all that had gone on with my band.
“And instinctively I felt like a change would do me good. As it happens, I didn’t really like dance music (or at least I thought I didn’t) when I first heard the instrumental to the track but there was something about the music that I liked and I thought ‘Why not?’”
She continued: “I think I needed something to shake things up a bit after I’d lost my record deal when I was 20.
“Anyhoo since then I’ve jumped around from different genres a lot and it’s all thanks to the adventure I had with Groovejet.”
