Dead Method has called his new album ‘Future Femme’ “a big middle finger” to those trying to tone down queer artists.
The singer-songwriter’s latest project “documents a few life changing experiences, big and small and my struggle to be heard in an industry that doesn’t value queer voices”.
Speaking in the September 2022 issue of Retro Pop, the star opens up about the inspirations behind the electro pop project, admitting creating the LP was a “magical experience”.
“When we were making the album, I kept returning to the same imagery – the goddess Venus being born out of the ocean – and applying that to the power in embracing your queer side and taking up space,” he says.
“So the thread of this story is woven throughout, along with the struggles that I’ve faced as a result.”
Of its meaning, he adds: “There’s a lot of push back in the industry for queer people to water themselves down and to be more digestible for a straight audience.
“The message of ‘Future Femme’, in essence, is a big middle finger to those voices.”
Touching on the influence music has had on his own LGBTQ+ journey, the star reflects: “Music has really allowed me to explore my LGBTQ+ identity and uncover what that really means for me.
“It has allowed me to share my story with people who might identify with me, or might not have understood me and it has given me the opportunity to connect with people I otherwise would not have.”
