An immersive David Bowie film is on the way from filmmaker Brett Morgen.
The director of ‘Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck’ is helming the production, which is set to feature thousands of hours of rare performance footage of the late music legend.
According to sources close to the movie, it is “neither documentary nor biography, but an immersive cinematic experience built, in part, upon thousands of hours of never before seen material” (via Variety).
The film is expected to be similar to Morgen’s 2015 documentary about the late Nirvana frontman, which featured artwork, music, and sound collages composed by Kurt.
And the project has the approval of some of Bowie’s closest collaborators, including producer Tony Visconti, who worked with the Starman hitmaker from 1968 through to his death in 2016.
Reports suggest producers are hoping to debut the film at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival in Utah in January, to coincide with celebrations for what would have been his 75th birthday.
Bowie died following a secret battle with cancer, aged 69.
To coincide with the milestone birthday and the anniversary of his passing, the unreleased ‘Toy’ album – originally recorded in 2001 and ultimately shelved – will finally get an official release as part of the ‘Brilliant Adventure (1992–2001)’ boxset.
