One of David Bowie’s final collaborators believes his last album, Blackstar, may not contain his final recordings.
The Starman hitmaker passed away on January 10th, 2016 – just two days after his 69th birthday and the release of his 25th and final LP. However, according to saxophonist Donny McCaslin, there could be more unreleased music yet to be heard by the world.
He tells NME: “There is the narrative of Blackstar being this farewell, which I totally get.
“But that co-exists with the fact that he was just so creative. He was planning on doing more.”
He added: “He was working on new music and he wanted to record in January.”
It goes against Blackstar producer Tony Visconti’s comments that the record was intended as a “parting gift” to fans, as Bowie knew his cancer was worsening.
It is unclear if any recordings had been completed for the mystery album before Bowie passed away.
Following his tragic death, posthumous albums were released in 2020 – an EP, Is It Any Wonder?, featuring recordings from 1995 – 1997, plus the live album, ChangesNowBowie.
