Claire Richards would love to re-record Steps’ classic 1999 hit Better Best Forgotten.
The group released the track as the fifth and final single from their debut album ‘Step One’ and, speaking to bandmate Ian ‘H’ Watkins on his BBC Radio Wales ‘Friday Night H’ show on Friday, April 30, the pair were asked which of the band’s tracks they’d be most keen to revisit.
Both came up with Better Best Forgotten – written by Andrew Frampton and Pete Waterman – with Claire explaining: “We did it once on a really small theatre tour we did with a [live] band, and we did it as a ballad.
“It worked so well, because the melody and the chords of the verses and chorus is actually really good, but the ‘woahs’ – as we shall call them – there was something done to them, because it’s not our natural voices.
“Let’s be honest, they made us sound like chipmunks,” she quipped. “We sound like Alvin and Theodore. And whenever I hear those, it does make me cringe.
“But, the rest of the song, because it’s got those lovely minor chords, is actually a really nice song to sing.”
H added: “I was actually thinking of the same song for the exact same reason. See, we are still in sync!”
It comes after the Daily Star reported the band is working on a new version of their breakout hit 5,6,7,8 to kick off their 25th anniversary celebrations next year.
Of their plans, Lisa Scott-Lee teased: “There’s plenty in the pipeline that’s new. Big plans are already place for that. I can’t say much or I’d get in trouble.
“It’s nice to keep a bit of mystery, but we like to keep it fun and give back to our fans who have been so loyal over the in that years.”
Before then, Steps will return in September with ‘What The Future Holds Pt. 2‘ – an 11 track album featuring current single Heartbreak in this City with Michelle Visage, plus 10 brand new songs.
Part Two also includes acoustic takes of previous singles and a bunch of remixes.
‘What The Future Holds Pt. 2’ is due for release September 10 and available to pre-order on CD, LP and Cassette.
