The Britney Spears-inspired musical ‘Once Upon A One More Time’ will open on Broadway in 2023.
Having originally been slated to open in Chicago in 2019, the show was initially delayed to April 2020, before the Covid-19 pandemic stalled the opening further.
It eventually premiered in Washington DC in November 2021 and, following its early success, ‘Once Upon A One More Time’ will open on Broadway at the Marquis Theatre on June 23, 2023, following a run of previews from May 13.
Based on an original story written by Jon Hartmere, the play centres on a book club formed by Cinderella, Snow White and Ariel. However, the trio is disrupted when their fairy godmother shares a book called ‘The Feminist Mystique’ with them.
The jukebox musical features the singles Oops I Did It Again, Circus and Toxic.
Having recently returned to the charts with her Elton John collaboration Hold Me Closer, Britney’s comeback follows the termination of her 13-year-long conservatorship, which has left her reluctant to return to the stage.
Citing her lack of creative control and unpleasant experience working with photographers, she explained: “…[T]he most offensive SO CALLED professional pictures on every tour.
“I mean they could have at least cheated and retouched them for me … just saying … 2 day shoots for new show in Vegas literally the worst ever … and me excited for the pictures for 5 months on tour … they never showed me any,” added the singer.
“I’d rather quit shit in my pool and shoot photos of myself in studios over working with the most offensive people in my life.”
Adding she was uncomfortable with the number of dancers she was forced to perform with during her ‘Britney: Piece of Me’ residency, she shared: “I’m pretty traumatised for life and yes I’m pissed as fuck and no I won’t probably perform again just because I’m stubborn and I will make my point.”
The I’m a Slave 4 U star last performed live in 2017.
