Britney Spears had cause for celebration on Wednesday after a Los Angeles judge terminated her dad Jamie as her conservator.
In a victory for the pop superstar and the #FreeBritney movement, Judge Brenda Penny axed Jamie from the conservatorship that has seen him control Britney’s affairs since 2008.
After hearing arguments from the attorneys representing the singer and her father, Penny ruled it was in the “best interest” of the Lucky star to remove Jamie from the legal arrangement.
She said: “I believe that the suspension is in the best interest of the conservatee, Ms. Britney Spears. The current situation is untenable.”
A formal termination is expected later this year.
Following the news, Britney took to Instagram to share a video of herself flying a plane, as she celebrated: “On cloud 9 right now !!!! First time flying a plane and first time in a prop plane !!! Geez I was scared !!! Pssss bringing the ship home, JL … Stay classy beautiful people !!!! New pics coming soon.”
According to Page Six, Britney “burst into tears” upon hearing the judge’s decision, with sources revealing: “For the longest time, she had begun to think that she would never see the day that her father’s domineering control over every single aspect of her life would end, but it finally happened.”
And those close to Britney rushed to celebrate her happy news, with fiancé Sam Asghari writing: “Free Britney! Congratulations!!!!!!!!!”
He went on to credit the Toxic star’s followers for their role in the landmark decision, insisting: “Her fan base is called the army for a reason.”
Other stars who hit up social media to share their joy include Cher, who tweeted: “Thank God. I’ve talked and prayed about this for years. I’m more than thrilled for her. Bless our superstar.”
Dionne Warwick added, “This is wonderful news. She can now breathe. Congratulations, Britney. Enjoy your life,” while La Toya Jackson shared, “A huge congratulations,” with the singer.
