Brian May is keen to record his first solo album in more than two decades.
The Queen guitarist released his most recent LP ‘Another World’ in 1998 and, speaking to Goldmine magazine, he discussed the possibility of creating new music.
Revealing plans to record a selection of instrumental tracks which show off his musicianship, he admitted: “I do think about it. And strangely enough, I think it probably would be instrumental this time. Because I have enough ideas. And I have lots of unfinished business.”
However, Brian wants to get his live dates with Queen + Adam Lambert out of the way before he commits to the solo venture.
He added: “We have a big world of touring to do. And we’ve been postponing and postponing the Queen tour, which we started just before Covid happened.
“Next May we will be doing a bunch of touring. Once that’s done, I think I will have the opportunity to sit down, and if I’m spared – as my mum used to say – and still functional, I think I might make the album.”
And Brian confessed working on an instrumental project will be an all-new experience for him, because he’s always written with vocalists in mind.
“I don’t have the dazzling technical expertise of a Joe Satriani or a Steve Vai or Al Di Meola or Eddie Van Halen,” he said.
“But I just might. My guitar is very much my voice. I can’t play faster than I think.
“I’ve always been obsessed with songs and songs to me are about singers, and about the vocals.”
The rocker recently dropped a 30th anniversary reissue of his debut solo album ‘Back To The Light’, which is out now on CD and vinyl.
And there could be more new music in the pipeline, as he and bandmate Roger Taylor have been in the studio with Adam Lambert – who stepped into late frontman Freddie Mercury’s shoes for Queen’s live shows – to work on new music.
“Adam, Roger and myself have been in the studio trying things out,” he shared. “So it’s not like we’re closed to the idea, it’s just that it hasn’t happened yet.”
