Suede’s new album is sounding “incredibly unmusical”, according to frontman Brett Anderson.
The group returned to the charts last year with their ninth LP, ‘Autofiction’, and the band’s frontman has already started readying tracks for its follow-up.
“Doing retro stuff is fine if you’re doing current stuff, and you really can learn a lot when you look at yourself in the past,” he told Mojo, while offering an insight into the early stages of the new record.
He says writing happens at home, “where no one can really hear me because what I need to do is just shriek, looking for some note”.
“It’s incredibly unmusical,” he added, while suggesting their latest project “landed so well because we tapped into the primal core of the band we are”.
Anderson offered: “I learned a lot about the band from ‘Autofiction’. It sounds obvious but sometimes you’ve got to be who you are, and just do that really well.”
In a review of the album, RETROPOP called ‘Autofiction’ a “strikingly fresh” set, adding the album “may just be their best release this century”.
The group recently shared details of their ‘Suede30’ celebrations, marking three decades since the release of their self-titled debut.
Originally arriving back in 1993, the LP features classics such as Animal Nitrate, So Young, The Drowners and Metal Mickey and hit No. 1 on the UK charts.
A precursor to the Brit-rock movement, the project sold over 100,000 copies in its first week and become the fastest-selling debut album ever in the UK at the time, going on to win the Mercury Music Prize.
‘Suede30’ sees the band release the album on 180g Black Vinyl, Double CD, Picture Disc and Blu-Ray, all with audio newly mastered by Phil Kinrade at AIR Studios from the original half-inch tapes and production masters, overseen and approved by original album producer Ed Buller.
The CD edition also includes the nine B-sides, along with a cover of The Pretenders‘ Brass in Pocket, while the Picture Disc has reimagined exclusive artwork by Paul Khera and a design featuring Anderson’s lyrics in a deluxe gatefold sleeve, featuring gold foil detailing and a classic Kevin Cummins photograph across the centrefold.
