Boy George didn’t appear in the iconic 1985 Live Aid concert because he “wasn’t in a fit state to do it”.

The event, conceived by the Boomtown Rats star Bob Geldof, brought together the world’s biggest acts for huge concerts to raise funds for those affected by famine in Ethiopia.

While Culture Club were at the top of their game in the 80s, George told the Grounded With Louis Theroux podcast he “messed up” his chances to appear at the live gig.

“I was otherwise engaged chemically,” he said. “I mean, I think it was a stroke of luck that we didn’t do it because I wasn’t in a fit state to do it.”

The Karma Chameleon star added: “We were originally asked but then I think everyone was just looking at the state of me and going, ‘This might be more harmful than good’. So, they basically didn’t follow up on it.”

The hitmaker is now clean and back on top, having recently released new single Isolation.

He’s also working on a new movie biopic – find out what he had to say about the “emotional” project here.
