Björk has released Ancestress as the latest track from her new album ‘Fossora’.

The single sees the Icelandic star pay tribute to her late mother and is accompanied by a video depicting a ritual funeral. 

Sharing the clip, which was directed by Andrew Thomas Huang with co–creative direction by Björk and James Merry, on social media, she explains the song was “written just after her wordly funeral and is probably a common musician´s reaction, the impulse of making your version of the story, later .

“for 20 years i have not been able to attend funerals as something in them rubbed me the wrong way,” she continued. “probably what was offending me most was how can one set off the spirit in such a claustrophobic environment as a church?

“when the soul sets off , it needs to be outside so there is room for how enormous it becomes when it merges with the elements.”

‘Fossora’ is expected to be a deeply personal set, with the musician previously revealing the LP is heavily centred on the death of her mother Hildur Rúna Hauksdóttir in 2018. 

“That’s quite early. I think me and my brother were not ready to… we thought she had 10 years left,” she explained of her death at the age of 72. 

“So we were like: ‘Come on,’ and getting her to fight and… and it was like she had an inner clock in her and she was just ready to go.”
