Singer-songwriter Alice D has opened up on the lessons she learned as the daughter of Bananarama’s Sara Dallin – and which of the group’s songs she’d love to cover.
Having co-written tracks such as Favourite, Velvet Lies and Forever Young on the duo’s latest album ‘Masquerade’, Alice is preparing to release her latest EP ‘Into The Light’ this month.
Speaking in Retro Pop’s October 2022 issue, she reflects on growing up in a musical family and how it’s helped shape her own career.
Of Sara’s influence on her daughter, Alice says: “I think her work ethic and determination is remarkable.
“She always taught me to stay true to myself, don’t let anyone take advantage or try to mould you into something you’re not.
“I have definitely taken that on board when it comes to my music and how I want to present myself – it’s got to be authentic. I’m incredibly fortunate to have such amazing women in my life.”
While her latest project has a distinct international sound, inspired by her “listening to a lot of obscure vinyl from Africa, Brazil, Latin America,” she’s not opposed to diving into Bananarama’s catalogue for the odd cover.
“Cruel Summer is an absolute classic,” she beams, when asked to name her top picks. “Only Your Love is epic and A Trick of the Night, it’s so hauntingly beautiful.”
For now, however, her focus is on the EP, of which Alice adds: “With this body of work, the title ‘Into the Light’ is very fitting for the themes that I cover.
“I have got to a place in my life where I feel confident in my skin and am able to step into my truth, my light.”
