Alexis Strum is back with her first original single in 18 years.
Karma is the lead track from ‘Sexy/Sad’, the upcoming third album from the singer-songwriter, and is co-written with Shadowhands, who also produced the song.
“I went into the studio with the lyric – I never used to start with lyrics, but I find that I do now – which I saw on a forum,” Alexis tells RETROPOP of her new release. “One woman was saying she caught her guy cheating, then something bad happened to him and she wrote in bold ‘Alexa play Taylor Swift Karma’ – which I thought was brilliant!”
It may have been a source of inspiration, but that line also has an unfortunate consequence, with Alexis – who has previously written songs for stars including Kylie Minogue and Rachel Stevens – adding: “I only realised in the mixing process that it does unfortunately set off your Alexa.
“So whether you’re talking about the track, singing along or even sometimes when it’s just playing, Alexa will switch over and play Taylor Swift’s Karma.”
Alongside the single, a music video mirrors Alexis’ return to music after a two-decade absence, shifting from the mundane chores of everyday life to her scooping a ‘Best Comeback’ prize – with a few nods to her 2005 Bad Haircut video too.
