Soft Cell showcase the darker, moodier side of their upcoming album, ‘Danceteria‘, with its latest single, ‘The Space Inside’.
The brooding electronic number points towards the moodier aspects of the duo’s final LP – due September 25 via Republic Of Music – and is described by the synth-pop legends as “an escapist pop anthem, with majestic vocals from Marc Almond and epic ravey synths from Dave Ball.”
It sees Marc Almond sing of “the queer leather bars and sex clubs of Manhattan’s Meatpacking District in the early 80s, where the city’s night owls find themselves ‘searching for redemption in the night’s decay’” over Dave Ball‘s signature synths.
It follows previous singles, including ‘In Heaven (When I Dance With You)‘ and the title song, from the duo’s first body of work since their 2022 comeback record, ‘*Happiness Not Included’, and subsequent companion piece, ‘*Happiness Now Completed’.
Arriving almost a year since Ball passed away last October, Almond has confirmed that ‘Danceteria’ will be the final Soft Cell album.
“There can be no more recordings of Soft Cell without Dave, it would not be possible,” he said. “The sad reality is that Dave Ball was half of Soft Cell, and live work aside, I can’t write Soft Cell songs without him.”
