After first teasing her seventh studio album earlier this year, Natalie Imbruglia has confirmed her latest LP ‘Algorithm’ will be released on September 4.
The new project from the Australian-British singer-songwriter – her first since ‘Firebird‘ in 2021 – was born of a tough mental health struggle for the star, which ultimately saw her “take something dark and turn it into light”.
A collaboration with MyRiot, David Sneddon, Fraser T Smith, Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody, Anu Pillai, Tobie Tripp, Mark Crew and Dan Priddy, she says of the project: “I chose to work with collaborators who also co-produce so from start to finish we were all so invested in every song.
“I really hope that people get as much joy from listening to this record as we did making it. And that they dance their arses off.”
Touching on the personal circumstances that inspired the music, she adds: “This was by far the most fun I’ve ever had making a record.
“It also happened to coincide with the most challenging time I’ve had with my mental health. This is the beauty of music and artistic expression. You can take something dark and turn it into light.”
The ‘Glorious’ singer goes on to explain how lead single ‘Upside Down’, encompasses those themes, after she realised she couldn’t “power through” anymore.
“The inability to control my emotions, wrestling with fight or flight mode, was awful, and I was reaching this critical point with it,” Imbruglia notes. “In a way, the song is about how sheer willpower – trying to force your way out of something – doesn’t always work. You need tools, support.”
‘Algorithm’ is released on September 4 and available to pre-order from Amazon, HMV, Rough Trade, Townsend and more. Listen to ‘Upside Down’ below.
