Late King of Pop Michael Jackson will be portrayed by his nephew Jaafar in an upcoming biopic centred on his life and career. 

The son of fellow Jackson 5 member Jermaine was announced as part of the cast on Monday, January 30, with Antoine Fuqua set to direct. 

In a statement, the filmmaker said he’s “proud to announce [Jaafar] as Michael – the motion picture event that explores the journey of the man who became the King of Pop”.

Speaking of landing his first major acting role, Jaafar added: “I’m humbled and honored to bring my Uncle Michael’s story to life. To all the fans all over the world, I’ll see you soon.” 

According to producer Graham King, whose credits include the Freddie Mercury biopic ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, a worldwide casting search took place before it was determined that Jaafar was the perfect candidate for the role.

“I met Jaafar over two years ago and was blown away by the way he organically personifies the spirit and personality of Michael,” he said. “It was something so powerful that even after conducting a worldwide search, it was clear that he is the only person to take on this role.

“I am beyond thrilled that he has come on board to portray his uncle and cannot wait for the world to see him on the big screen as Michael Jackson.”

Claiming Jaafar “embodies my son,” Michael’s mother Katherine told Variety: “It’s so wonderful to see him carry on the Jackson legacy of entertainers and performers”.

Jaafar started acting aged 12 and released his first original single, Got Me Singing, in 2019.

A release date for ‘Michael’ has yet to be announced, but according to Fuqua it is “coming soon.”
