Boy George urges Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo to reconsider his stance on anti-LGBT laws on his latest track Lift Up Your Head.
Earlier this year, a proposal that includes criminalising LGBT advocacy, advocates for conversion therapy and imposes longer jail sentences was introduced in parliament in the West African country.
In response, George has shared the reggae-influenced track, which addresses President Akufo-Addo and urges him to “lift up [his] head” and recognise the consequences of the policy.
In a video shared on social media, the Culture Club star said: “Homophobia is an obsession with someone else’s sexuality. It’s kind of creepy to think that people spend all that time in someone else’s ‘narrative’, if you like.
“I think music should be about something. It does have the power to change people’s emotions, absolutely.”
He added: “Anyone who is homophobic, hateful, racist, prejudiced against trans people is 100 per cent not in the God frequency.
“You can’t be in the God frequency – there isn’t some spare lanes for a**eholes.”
The track, one of several standalone releases from the Karma Chameleon star, is out now.
