Mariah Carey took a break from the studio to tease fans with news of “exciting” new music she’s working on.
The With You singer released her 15th studio album ‘Caution’ in 2018 and, according to the star, work is well underway on the follow-up – and Mariah is more than thrilled with the results.
Speaking on Twitter’s new Spaces feature, she shared: “Oh my gosh, you guys! I’m like obsessed with what I’m doing right now. But I can’t reveal it yet. It’s exciting!
“I’m really with this music. I haven’t made [music in this way] in years. During the pandemic, I was able to rest my voice and get it back to where it needs to be. So here we are!”
Mariah recently revealed she is taking a different approach to making new music after admitting her last LP ‘Caution’ was “rushed”.
Speaking on the Questlove Supreme podcast, Mariah confessed she’s not the biggest fan of the record due to disagreements with her label behind the scenes.
When asked directly about MC16, she took the opportunity to share her thoughts on its predecessor, explaining: “Yes [I am getting to new music], but with a different approach.
“When I did ‘Caution’, I love some of the songs from ‘Caution’, but I don’t think I was at the place vocally where I could be now. Also, it was rushed.
“Not that it was rushed, and look, it was my best, most critically acclaimed album, you know I think that’s because the critics have changed and shifted since back in the day.
“Believe it or not, if you look at those things, it’s the [critics] most favourite album, but what I was gonna say is that I didn’t have the time I would normally take, and I really wish I did have that time to do a few more records on that album to just, fully have that expression.”
Mariah’s comments come off the back of a busy year for the star, who released her top-selling memoir, ‘The Meaning of Mariah Carey’, and celebrated three decades since the release of her debut album.
Along with vinyl reissues of her entire discography, up until 2014’s ‘Me. I Am Mariah. The Elusive Chanteuse.’, she also released ‘The Rarities’ – an album of outtakes, B-sides and live cuts.
In our review of the album, Retro Pop said Mariah “more than proves she’s earned her ‘icon’ status” across its 15 tracks.
