Mel B didn’t tell her fellow Spice Girls she was set to compete on season two of The Masked Singer UK.
The pop star was unveiled as Seahorse on Saturday night’s episode of the show after her performance of Kylie Minogue’s classic hit Can’t Get You Out of My Head.
Speaking to host Joel Dommett, the For Once in My Life hitmaker revealed she “didn’t tell” any of her bandmates about doing the show and even kept it from her mum, who’s a “big gossip”
“I didn’t tell any of them. I didn’t tell anybody, not even my mum and my mum’s a big gossip so I definitely wouldn’t have told her.”
When asked what bandmates Emma Bunton, Geri Horner and Melanie C would make of her appearing on the show, Mel laughed: “They’ll probably be annoyed I didn’t tell them!”
The star also confessed she found singing in such an elaborate costume nervewracking and tried hard to conceal her distinctive Leeds accent.
“It’s a bit nerve-wracking because with this mask on you can’t see and it’s very constricted – so it’s literally like singing with someone’s hand in your face so that bit was a bit daunting but when the music starts you just get into it,” she mused.
“I thought I did quite a good job not sounding so northern. To be quite girly and soft with no accent was hard work actually.”
It was a technique that also failed for Sophie Ellis-Bextor, who saw herself eliminated from the contest on its Boxing Day debut.
Following her performance of Dua Lipa’s massive hit Don’t Start Now, judge Mo correctly guessed the star was changing her accent while singing.
After her identity was revealed, Sophie tweeted: “Yes so as most of you guessed it was me and she in #themaskedsinger. Even my one year old pointed at the telly and shouted ‘mummy!’ when I started singing in the alien suit!
“Anyhoo a fun and trippy way to spend a few days and enjoy the rest of the show- no idea who anyone is!”
