Mariah Carey’s classic holiday hit could finally top the UK Singles Chart for the first time ever.
East 17’s Stay Another Day – which has been re-recorded for 2020 – famously kept All I Want For Christmas is You off the top of the countdown when it was released back in 1994 and, although Mariah’s tune has charted since, it has never come close to number one – until now.
All I Want For Christmas Is You sits at No. 2 on the Singles Chart’s midweek countdown and is only 900 chart sales behind the midweek No. 1, Ariana Grande’s Positions.
The track spent three weeks atop the US Billboard Hot 100 in 2019, earning Mimi her 19th chart-topper in America. It has also topped Billboard’s first Holiday 100 of 2020
All I Want for Christmas Is You has now spent 41 of the 46 total weeks on top since the holiday chart launched in 2011.
On this side of the pond, it’s also a strong contender for the coveted UK Christmas No. 1, alongside festive cuts including Liam Gallagher’s All You’re Dreaming Of and Can’t Stop Christmas by Robbie Williams.
Another Mariah track, 2010’s Oh Santa!, could also propel her to the top of the charts, thanks to a new version featuring Ariana Grande and Jennifer Hudson. The single is due to drop on December 4th – alongside Mariah Carey’s Magical Christmas Special.
The holiday spectacle will premiere on Apple TV+ – check out the trailer here.
