Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s classic hit Murder on the Dancefloor is reaching new international audiences thanks to Tiger King star Carole Baskin.
Baskin, who appeared on the hit Netflix series, is currently competing on Dancing With the Stars in the US, with the animal rights activist hitting the dancefloor twice so far with a Paso doble to Survvor’s Eye of the Tiger and a Viennese waltz to Tom Jones’ What’s New Pussycat.
While the show has kept her song choices strictly animal-related, however, other TV show have soundtracked her appearances with more choice selections.
Last week, Australian TV show Sunrise reported on Baskin’s new reality TV career, while simultaneously poking fun at the 59-year-old over allegations she killed her husband Don Lewis and fed him to tigers in 1997.
As footage of the star competing on the DWTS stage played onscreen, Sophie’s classic hit could be heard playing in the background – with eagle-eyed viewers who’d got their claws into Tiger King during lockdown quickly picking up on the jibe.
Although Baskin has strenuously denied the claims, the story of her husband’s disappearance was prominently featured in Tiger King, with rival zookeeper Joe Exotic alleging in the show that Baskin killed him.
Lewis’ family has since reopened an investigation into his disappearance, and his daughters Gale, Lynda and Donna and his former assistant Anne McQueen are suing Baskin for being “complicit with jokes about Don’s death on Dancing With the Stars, when judges brought up TikTok videos inspired by her storyline in Tiger King”.
Tiger King: Murder, Madness and Mayhem is streaming on Netflix now.
