The story of TLC is being brought to life on stage in new musical ‘Crazysexycool’.
Named after the trio’s iconic second studio album – which featured classic hits including Creep, Waterfalls and Diggin’ On You – the show is set to launch in Washington DC at the Arena Stage.
Kwame Kwei-Armah – who previously conceived ‘One Love: The Bob Marley Musical’ – is believed to have written the jukebox musical and is expected to direct the premiere, which features choreography from Chloe O. Davis.
It is not yet clear to what extent the band members are involved in the production, however both Tionne ‘T-Boz’ Watkins and Rozonda ‘Chilli’ Thomas have shared official statements supporting the production.
T-Boz said that “bringing this story to the stage” feels like both “a dream come true” and “a totally new and exciting challenge,” (via Stereogum), while Chillia explained it will allow audiences the chance “to hear our story — mostly fact with a sprinkle of fiction — told in our own way.”
Third founding member, Lisa ‘Left Eye’ Lopes, who completed the line-up, died in a car crash in 2002 while on a trip to Honduras.
“TLC completely changed the game. Their music gave a voice to women everywhere, empowering them to be confident and unapologetic,” added Bill Diggins, whose Diggit Theatrical Group is producing the musical.
“But this isn’t just a story about the music; it’s about the sisterhood between these women and what kept them together through both unimaginable challenges and chart-topping success.”
