Swing Out Sister are surprised by how ‘primitive’ some of their early recordings sound.
The duo – starring Corinne Drewery and Andy Connell – are celebrating 35 years of hits with the release of new box set, ‘Swing Out Sister: Blue Mood, Breakout And Beyond – The Early Years Part 1’.
Speaking in the August 2022 issue of Retro Pop, the sophisti-pop pair look back on their first releases, with Andy admitting: “I realised how hard it was to make a record in those days. It was very seat-of-the-pants.
“When you think about the primitive nature of computers and instruments back then, to try and make something that sounded right was quite a challenge.
“On some of the very early tracks I can hear us struggling to do that. You can hear us learning the craft.”
Originally a trio with drummer Martin Jackson, Corinne insists its a miracle they ever managed to produce music, because the three of them were so different.
“I wanted to be Shirley Bassey, Dusty Springfield, Dionne Warwick and The Supremes all rolled into one,” she laughs. “Andy was talking about Weather Report and jazz, then Martin was more into punk and a much heavier sound.
“How on earth we managed to get anything done at all is something I’m quite amazed by, but we stuck to our decision to just do the stuff we liked.”
