Sugababes are keen to put out an album they recorded back in 2012 but never released.
Back when they were known as MKS, the group – starring Mutya Buena, Keisha Buchanan and Siobhan Donaghy – recorded an LP together, but the project never materialised.
One of the tracks, Flatline, was issued as a single, and during their current live dates the trio are performing another song, Today.
Many of the recordings later leaked online but, speaking to The Sun’s Bizarre column, the group admitted they’re still keen to release the project.
“It’s some of our best work,” says Siobhan. “The tracklisting that we like for it, I think, is just banger after banger, it really is.”
Meanwhile, they’re also looking to record new music, with Keisha adding: “Writing and trying to be creative, it takes time – although we say that and when we get in the studio it is quick.
“But the point is, we are trying to get everything together. We’re only just coming out of Covid and stuff, so we’re hopeful.”
One of the tracks, Love In Stereo, was later recorded by Bananarama for their 2019 album ‘In Stereo’.
Speaking in the July 2022 issue of Retro Pop, Richard X – who co-wrote and produced the song – reflects on the situation, saying: “They worked really hard on that and I don’t quite know why it didn’t fully come out.
“I don’t know what happened there… All I know is that our song and a lot of others leaked and we thought, ‘Ah, that’s a shame, but at least you know some people can hear it’.”
Of Bananarama’s version, he adds: “I think it was [Fascination management director] Peter Loraine – he was managing Bananarama at the time and I think he played it to them and they were like, ‘Yes, this is perfect for us.’ It lyrically worked really well for them and almost felt it had been written for them in a way.”
Sugababes will embark on a UK tour – their first in 20 years – throughout October/November 2022.
