Sandi Thom is celebrating 20 years of her chart-topping 2006 hit ‘I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker (With Flowers In My Hair)’ by reworking the tune into a World Cup anthem for Scotland.
Thom first teased the reimagined track earlier this week on social media, saying “we had an idea, a really silly idea” alongside shots of her and tribal band Clann An Drumma (Gaelic for ‘Children of the Drum’) playing the tune while walking down the Royal Mile in Edinburgh.
Retitled ‘Proud To Be From Scotland’, the track was released across digital platforms on Friday, June 12 – two days before Scotland play their first match against Haiti in Boston.
She sings: ‘Oh, I’m proud to be from Scotland / After all these years we rise / We’ve been waiting for our moment / Now it’s written in the skies / Oh, I’m proud to be from Scotland / Where Bravehearts still believe / We’re marching to the World Cup / With the nation on our sleeves.’
