Peter Gabriel has launched to the top of the UK Albums Chart with ‘i/o’.
The first original release in over 20 years from the former Genesis star debuted at No. 1, following a week-long battle with K-pop outfit ATEEZ.
In doing so, it becomes his highest-charting album since 1992’s ‘Us’, which peaked at No. 2
“It was 37 years ago that ‘So’ was the No. 1 album and I never expected to be here again. I’ve just been told that we are No. 1 in the UK with ‘i/o’, so it’s amazing,” says Gabriel.
“I want to thank everyone that helped me make the album because it was a long, slow process, involving a lot of very talented people. But, mainly I need to thank all of you for supporting me for all this time and for making this happen. Thank you.”
His previous solo chart-toppers include ‘Peter Gabriel 3’ (1980) and ‘So’ (1986).
‘i/o’ also peaked at No. 2 on the Official Vinyl Albums Chart and Official Record Store Chart.
In a review of the album, RETROPOP called ‘i/o’ “a creative project [Gabriel] needed to undertake” and “a testament to [his] enduring artistry”.
