Pet Shop Boys could have more new music on the way after working remotely on “tonnes” of tunes during the coronavirus lockdown.
The group released their 14th studio album ‘Hotspot’ back in January 2020 and, according to singer Neil Tennant, they haven’t stopped creating since.
He tells the Daily Star: “Chris Lowe and I did a lot of writing. We’ve written tonnes of songs, we’ve written a theatre piece.
“Chris and I are both quite spontaneous so it’s when the mood strikes, really. But Chris writes music for pleasure and we are lucky in lockdown he ‘s written a lot of stuff.”
And the pandemic also gave Neil the opportunity to hone his skills behind the mixing desk, as he learned to produce his own vocals.
“Right at the beginning of lockdown we did the lockdown version of West End Girls for which I recorded my vocal on my iPhone and it sounded pretty good, I thought.
“Chris said, ‘Why don’t you use GarageBand?’ So I got a keyboard and lo and behold there and two programmers in Pet Shop Boys now.”
Although the downtime has meant the group has been forced to push their live shows, the duo is excited to finally return to the stage.
Neil says: “I think there is going to be a big explosion of audience energy, joy and excitement and all the rest of it.
“I also think people will get back to normal fairly quickly – I’m looking forward to having a normal life again.”
