Paula Abdul returned to her cheeky ways as she replaced Luke Bryan the ‘American Idol’ judging panel on Monday (April 12) night.

The Straight Up hitmaker served as a permanent judge on the US talent contest alongside former co-stars Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson from 2002–2010, and reprised her role this week in place of current regular Luke, who has contracted Covid-19.

And it wasn’t long before the star was casting trouble, after she was treated to a live video call with Randy by host Ryan Seacrest.

“It’s so good to see you! We’re all back, now we just need the STD,” Paula quipped in reference to Simon, leaving Ryan unsure of what to say.

She quickly realised she’d shocked with the remark and thought of an acronym – “the super, talented… debonair” – as  Ryan speedily moved the chat on, remarking: “I think Paula is doing an amazing job, next to the amazing Katy and the amazing Lionel.”

In a an announcement ahead of Monday’s show, Idol bosses confirmed Luke would be absent from the season’s first live show, sharing: “Luke will be missed at our 1st #AmericanIdol LIVE show tonight, but is resting in quarantine at home & we wish him a speedy recovery.

“We’re so excited to announce @PaulaAbdul will be stepping in as a guest judge with Lionel Richie & Katy Perry as we get closer to a new winner!”

Added Paula: “The secret’s out…I’m beyond excited to make my return to the judges desk on @AmericanIdol TONIGHT.

“We’ll miss you tonight @LukeBryanOnline… Thank you for trusting me with your judge’s seat!”

Meanwhile, Luke posted on his own feed: “I’m sad to say I won’t be a part of tonight’s first live @AmericanIdol show. I tested positive for COVID but I’m doing well and look forward to being back at it soon.”

It’s not yet clear when Luke tested positive for coronavirus or for how long Paula will remain on the panel.

Production on the show has followed Covid-19 guidelines, and the singers, hosts and crew are tested for the virus often.

“Shooting a show during a pandemic constantly presents new challenges,” ABC said in a release, “But we are blessed to have the best crew in the business.”

Sunday night’s episode of ‘American Idol’ saw contestants narrowed down to a final 16, with 10 expected to advance via the overnight public vote. The six remaining singers will perform for the final two spots in the group of 12 on Monday.

‘American Idol’ is hosted by Ryan Seacrest and airs on ABC from 8-10 p.m. ET.
