Mis-Teeq star Sabrina Washington has opened up on the racism she experienced in the music industry during the group’s heyday.
The star appeared as one-third of the group, alongside Alesha Dixon and Su-Elise Nash, and scored 7 consecutive top 10 hits, including All I Want and Scandalous.
But behind the scenes, she told The Sun she was faced with adversity due to the colour of her skin.
“The first time I experienced racism was in the music industry. It’s not talked about,” Sabrina said.
“I was told I wasn’t aesthetically desirable, because I was a darker-skinned Black woman,” she shared. “I was good enough to sing, but was told I’d never go on the front of a magazine, as Black women don’t sell them”
Sabrina, who is reportedly set to land a new radio show deal. went on to reflect that, while it’s not spoken about openly, the racism that remains in the music industry is plain to see.
She noted: “There hasn’t been another all-Black girlband in the UK since Mis-Teeq with the same success.
“It was almost 20 years ago,” she admitted, adding, “That’s a shame.”
