Public Image Ltd – starring former Sex Pistol John Lydon – are in the running to represent Ireland at the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest.
The group, which formed in 1978 following the Pistols’ split, is among six acts competing to represent the country during the Grand Final in Liverpool, England.
They’ll face-off as one of six potential entrants during the selection process, during which the winner will be chosen by a combination of national jury, international jury, and public votes in February.
Their ballad Hawaii is described as a love letter to Nora, Lydon’s wife of more than 40 years, who is living with Alzheimer’s disease.
“It is dedicated to everyone going through tough times on the journey of life, with the person they care for the most,” he said in a statement.
“It’s also a message of hope that ultimately love conquers all.”
Although there are no rules regarding the nationality of contestants, Lydon’s parents were from Ireland. The other acts in the running are Adgy, Connolly, Wild Youth, Leila Jane, and K Muni & ND.
