Christina Aguilera and Sabrina Carpenter have teamed up on a refreshed version of What A Girl Wants.
While celebrating 25 years of her self-titled debut album, Aguilera visited the Spotify Music Studios in Los Angeles “to pay homage to the music in a way that honours the girl she was 25 years ago while remaining authentic to the woman she is today”.
During the live sessions, she hooked up with Espresso singer Carpenter to duet on the record’s second single, with the rising star and global chart-topper gushing over Aguilera’s influence on her at a young age.
“I think the first time I ever heard your voice was my mum – thank you to my mum – played me a video of you singing at eight years old, A Sunday Kind Of Love,” she says. “That was just like the most inspiring thing for me ever to see as a young girl that wanted to sing, but just didn’t know I could do it at that age.”
She added that the video was “the main reason that I started singing, and that I wanted to be become a singer, so I’m just so grateful”.
Also featured on the Live Spotify Anniversaries is mgk, who plays a new guitar solo on Genie In A Bottle, while producer Ron Fair & songwriter Heather Holley – both of whom were integral to the original album’s recording – appear, with Fair reminiscing on the era with Aguilera and Heather performing a duet on Obvious.
