Britney Spears has been named as the most influential person of 2021 in the annual TIME100 reader poll.
The singer grabbed four per cent of the vote after dominating headlines in her battle to be freed from her conservatorship arrangement, which has been in place since 2008.
A spokesperson for the publication says, “She dominated the news cycle this year as a fan-led campaign to end her 13-year conservatorship under her father gained momentum, with people around the world calling to #FreeBritney.
“Spears spoke openly in court for the first time in June about her circumstances, alleging she’d been subject to ‘abusive’ conditions, and her legal battle for autonomy highlighted a system that many disability rights advocates have long fought to reform.”
Health Care Workers came in second place with 3.1 per cent of the vote, followed by Vaccine Developers, K-pop group BTS, and Olympic gymnast Simone Biles.
Britney has been fighting to remove her father from the controlling role he has held for 13 years while seeking an end to the overall conservatorship, which has left her “traumatised” and “depressed”.
Following a legal filing from Jamie’s lawyer, in which he agreed to work on an exit strategy off the back of “unjustified attacks” from Britney’s supporters and members of his own family, the singer seemingly shared her excitement with a clip of herself dancing and a message about “freedom”.
In a huge turn-around for the star, Jamie has since filed to end the conservatorship completely, insisting ,“the grounds for establishment of a conservatorship may no longer exist.”
