Britney Spears’ mother Lynne has broken her silence on the pop superstar’s conservatorship battle, calling on a Los Angeles judge to allow the singer to choose her own lawyer.
A’ legal permission slip was filed on Wednesday, July 7, a day after the Toxic star’s court-appointed attorney, Sam Ingham, submitted his resignation.
“Petitioner Lynne Spears, interested party and mother of the Conservatee, hereby petitions this Court to listen to the wishes of her daughter, and as a first step, respectfully requests an Order granting permission to the Conservatee to hire her own private legal counsel, or, in the alternative, an Order appointing a private attorney of Conservatee’s choosing,” it reads, according to deadline.
Last month, the Oops!… I Did It Again singer told a Los Angeles court she was “depressed” and “traumatised” by the situation, which has been enforced on the star since 2008.
During the appearance, she pleaded with a judge to scrap the legal restrictions over her life, which see her father Jamie Spears control various aspects of her personal and professional arrangements.
In the days following the testimony, Britney lost an initial bid to have Jamie removed from the conservatorship – which she wants to be completely abolished – and now her mum has spoken out on the scandal.
She told journalists Ronan Farrow and Jia Tolentino for The New Yorker: “I got mixed feelings about everything
“I don’t know what to think… It’s a lot of pain, a lot of worry.”
According to the publication, the call was made days prior to the court date, and Lynne “declined to answer detailed questions about the case”.
And it appears she was speaking without the knowledge of her family, as she suggested she may have to “hang up abruptly” should a family member walk into the room.
During the hearing, Britney insisted: “I’ve lied and told the whole world ‘I’m okay. And I’m happy.’ It’s a lie. I thought [if] just maybe I said that enough… Because I’ve been in denial. I’ve been in shock. I am traumatised.
“You know, fake it till you make it. But now I’m telling you the truth. Okay? I’m not happy,” insisted the Stronger hitmaker. “I can’t sleep. I’m so angry. It’s insane. And I’m depressed. I cry every day.”
Following Britney’s shocking claims surrounding her treatment in the conservatorship, fans supporting the #FreeBritney movement and stars took to social media to lend their support.
