Singer-songwriter Alexis Strum will release Karma – her first original single in 18 years – later this month.
The star, who last year returned to music with the long-awaited release of her shelved albums ‘Addicted’ and ‘Cocoon’, is back with the brand new track, which makes direct reference to Taylor Swift’s song of the same name.
Speaking exclusively to RETROPOP, Alexis says the song – which was co-written and produced by Shadow Hands (Bnann aka DZ Watts and Gareth Young), and offers the first taste of her upcoming third album – was inspired by a post she read on an online forum.
“I won’t tell you the name of this page, but there are hundreds of thousands of women in this group and they all share stories of awful men,” she laughs. “There’s so much tea!
“So one woman was saying she caught her guy cheating, then something bad happened to him and she wrote in bold ‘Alexa play Taylor Swift Karma’ – which I thought was brilliant!
“So I took that line in with Shadow Hands and we wrote the song, but I only realised in the mixing process that it does unfortunately set off your Alexa. So whether you’re talking about the track, singing along or even sometimes when it’s just playing, Alexa will switch over and play Taylor Swift’s Karma.”
Announcing the single on Instagram, Alexis – who has written tracks for Kylie Minogue and Rachel Stevens, among others – added: “I am soooooo excited to be back with this song- my first original solo release in 18 years. Let’s do this!”
