Lady Gaga is the latest star to headline a huge concert at Copacabana Beach on May 3.
The Die With A Smile hitmaker will play in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil later this year, following in the footsteps of Madonna, who played to a record-breaking 1.6 million fans at the same location last year.
It's a great honor to be asked to sing for Rio–for my whole career the fans in Brazil have been part of the lifeblood of the little monsters. It’s her first performance in the country since 2012 and comes eight years after Gaga – who releases her seventh album, ‘Mayhem’, in March – was forced to cancel her Rock in Rio show in 2017, due to severe back pain caused by fibromyalgia.
“It’s a great honor to be asked to sing for Rio–for my whole career the fans in Brazil have been part of the lifeblood of the little monsters,” she said in a post on X. “I’ve been dying to come perform for you for years and was heartbroken when I had to cancel years ago because I was hospitalized.
“Your understanding that I needed that time to heal meant the world to me. I am now coming back and I feel better than ever and am working so hard to make sure this show is one you will never forget.
“Get ready for MAYHEM on the beach.”
Rio’s mayor Eduardo Paes recently confirmed Gaga’s gig, telling RedeTV: “May 3rd, Lady Gaga in Rio de Janeiro – this is the first time I’m confirming it.”
Explaining why he’s keen to keep bringing major stars to the city, Eduardo added: “I see these big events this way – they boost the economy, create opportunities and promote the city. Rio thrives on its branding, its image.
“We hosted Madonna last year, and this year, it’s Lady Gaga. There, I said it.”
