Wham! are looking to extend their lead atop the UK Singles Chart as Last Christmas leads the race for the UK’s Christmas No. 1.
Forty years after its release, the classic hit from George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley sits at the summit for the first look at this week’s countdown, following the release of three limited edition 40th anniversary vinyl singles.
The track famously missed out on the feat in 1984, when it settled at No. 2 behind Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas?, before finally reaching Christmas No. 1 in 2023 after 39 years.
It would be a particularly poignant moment, as Michael passed away on December 25 in 2016.
However, the race to the top spot looks tight, with only 3,000 units between Wham! and current No. 2, Tom Grennan, with his Amazon exclusive track, It Can’t Be Christmas.
It looks as though he fancies his chances, with the star even getting a Christmas No. 1 tattoo, with a blank space for the winner’s name to be inserted.
He said in a video posted online: “Today I’m at the tattoo shop and I thought I’m gonna make it interesting. I’m gonna get ‘Christmas No.1 2024 is…’ and I’m gonna let you lot decide what goes on my leg. It’s up to you. Stream it, buy the vinyl, we’ll see what happens. Do not let this flop.”
Completing a festive trio is Mariah Carey, with the Queen of Christmas’ 1994 classic All I Want For Christmas Is You currently sitting at No. 3.
