Björk has shared details of the themes behind her brand new album ‘Fossora’.

The singer’s 10th album is due this autumn and, in an announcement for the follow-up to 2017’s ‘Utopia’, she shared its stunning artwork and a statement on the project. 

Revealing the album’s first single is called Atopos, she penned: “each album always starts with a feeling that i try to shape into sound.

“this time around the feeling was landing on the earth and digging my feet into the ground.

“it was also woven into how i experienced the ‘now’. this time around 7 billion of us did it together nesting in our homes quarantining being long enough in one place that we shot down roots.”

Björk continued: “my new album ‘fossora’ is about that. it is a word i made up. it is the feminine of fossore ( digger, delver, ditcher ), so in short it means ‘she who digs’ ( into the ground ).

“so sonically it is about bass, heavy bottom-end, we have 6 bass clarinets and punchy sub.”

‘Fossora’ is expected to be a deeply personal set, with the musician previously revealing the LP is heavily centred on the death of her mother Hildur Rúna Hauksdóttir in 2018. 

“That’s quite early. I think me and my brother were not ready to… we thought she had 10 years left,” she explained of her death at the age of 72. 

“So we were like: ‘Come on,’ and getting her to fight and… and it was like she had an inner clock in her and she was just ready to go.”

Two tracks – Sorrowful Soil and Ancestress – are said to directly speak of the loss, while the album also features collaborations with Serpentwithfeet and Indonesian punks Gabber Modus Operandi, along with contributions from her son Sindri and daughter Doa.
